THE BUZZ.

She's leaving - stat: Sherry Stringfield, who plays the talented but troubled Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC's ``ER,'' will make her final appearance on the series tonight, after deciding to walk away from this starring role on the most popular show on television.

No one at Warner Bros., the studio that owns ``ER,'' or NBC would confirm Stringfield's decision Tuesday, but several of her close associates said she would indeed play her last scene as Dr. Lewis in this week's episode.

Unlike other stars who quit shows to make movies, as David Caruso did after one year on ``NYPD Blue,'' or to move on to other television shows, Stringfield is not leaving to take on other work.

In fact, she will be contractually forbidden to act in another television show for the next 2-1/2 years and will have to get permission from Warner Bros. to do any film work during the show's shooting season.

Stringfield will be able to make a film without such permission only if it is shot during the 12 weeks in the spring and summer when ``ER'' is on hiatus, as she would have been able to do under the contract she signed when the series began.

The studio insisted on these Draconian terms, a close associate of the star said, to underscore the point that actors cannot easily break their long-term series contracts.

Holiday sounds: Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow and Beck are some of the acts set to play KROQ-FM's (106.7) Almost Acoustic Christmas shows next month.

Profits from the seventh annual concerts, which take place at the Universal Amphitheatre on Dec. 13 and 14, go to various local charities. Ticket details, including when they go on sale, will be announced on KROQ soon.

Booked for the Dec. 13 show are Tracy Bonham, the Cardigans, Garbage, Jewel, Poe, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Amos, Crow and Apple.

The second show features 311, Cake, Eels, Orbital, the Presidents of the United States of America, Republica, Social Distortion, Beck and others to be announced.
