DiCaprio heads to `The Beach': 20th Century Fox has won all rights to ``The Beach,'' Leonardo DiCaprio's first post-``Titanic'' film. Danny Boyle (``Trainspotting'') will direct. Filming is slated to start early next year for a potential Christmas 1999 release. Based on the novel by Alex Garland, ``The Beach'' is a story about the last remaining Eden, a secret beach near Thailand. DiCaprio will portray Richard, an aimless traveler who sets off to find the paradise after he receives a hand-drawn map by a lunatic who calls himself Daffy Duck.

From hoops to `Glory': Director Steve James of ``Hoop Dreams'' fame returns to the basketball court for ``Passing Glory,'' a period tale he will direct in September for TNT. Andre Braugher, the departing star of NBC's ``Homicide: Life on the Street,'' will star in the drama. Executive produced by Quincy Jones and Magic Johnson, the TV movie concerns an idealistic priest, Paul Verrett, who coaches basketball at a black parochial school in New Orleans in the early 1960s. He sets up a sanctioned game between his school and a white parochial prep school.
