'Squid and Whale' tops Independent Spirit noms as awards season begins

Hollywood's year-end awards season has officially opened with the first nominations by industry peers, Film Independent's 2006 Independent Spirit Awards.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Warren Daniels (born February 19, 1955) is an American actor, musician and playwright. Biography
Early life
 and Laura Linney, led the field with six nominations, including best feature, best director for Noah Baumbach, and best male and female leads for Daniels and Linney.

In the best feature category, it will compete against ``Brokeback Mountain,'' ``Capote,'' ``The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada'' and ``Good Night, and Good Luck.'' Each of those films has four nominations.

George Clooney George Timothy Clooney (May 6, 1961) is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter who gained fame as the lead doctor in the long-running television drama, ER  earned a best director nod for ``Good Night,'' as did Ang Lee (``Brokeback Mountain''), Gregg Araki (``Mysterious Skin'') and Rodrigo Garcia (``Nine Lives'').

S. Epatha Merkerson, who had to wing her Emmy acceptance speech because her notes were lost in the bodice of her gown, may get another chance as a female lead nominee for ``Lackawanna Blues,'' which played in festivals in addition to its airing on HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

Up for best first feature are ``Crash,'' ``Lackawanna Blues,'' ``Me and You and Everyone We Know,'' ``Thumbsucker'' and ``Transamerica.''

The Independent Spirit Awards will be presented March 4 in a tent on a Santa Monica beach and televised live on IFC (Internet Foundation Classes) A class library from Netscape that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. . 50 Cent is a finalist in eight categories (twice in ringtones), followed by Carey's seven and Green Day's six. They will compete in artist of the year as well as album of the year for 50 Cent's ``The Massacre,'' Carey's ``The Emancipation of Mimi'' and Green Day's ``American Idiot.''

Also up for album of the year honors is Eminem's ``Encore.'' ``American Idol'' winner Kelly Clarkson is the fourth finalist for artist of the year.
