STRIKE UP THE BAND: In a show of support for the men, women and families of the U.S. military, local radio stations K-EARTH (101.1) and KNX-AM (1070) will launch a 36-hour radiothon May 13 to benefit the Bob Hope Hollywood USO USO: see United Service Organizations.

The airport facility is a recreation and service area for troops and their families on the move to and from duty posts, serving some 30,000 troops annually. The center, which also provides the first taste of home for many returning soldiers, has been increasingly active due to the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Spearheaded by K-EARTH afternoon drive personality Gary Bryan Gary Bryan is a radio disc jockey, currently on the air in Los Angeles, California at KRTH 101.1 FM. He is a veteran broadcaster, having been on-air at Z100 in New York City and in virtually every major market in the United States. , the radiothon will include appearances by celebrities, civic leaders and military personnel. The goal is to raise funds for the nonprofit center, which receives no government funding.

Listeners of the two stations can make donations by calling (800) 876-8454 during the radiothon, or they can make credit card donations online at www.kearth101.com, or they can send checks made out to Bob Hope USO to P.O. Box 1776, Hollywood, CA 90078.

SOBER REFLECTIONS: Television host Pat O'Brien says he didn't go into alcohol rehabilitation to escape embarrassing stories about obscene telephone calls he made that were circulating on the Internet.

``I fled because I was dying,'' O'Brien said. ``Thank God on some level this happened, and I'm not dead.''

O'Brien, host of the entertainment news program ``The Insider,'' spoke to television's Dr. Phil Dr. Phil may refer to:

Dominant in its post-``Desperate Housewives'' Sunday 10 p.m. slot, ``Grey's Anatomy'' (an average of 17.8 million viewers, 7.7 rating/19 share among adults 18-49) is delivering ABC's strongest 18-49 series performance in the hour in four years and qualifies as the highest-rated midseason drama in 12 years in total viewers (since CBS' ``Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman'' in 1993) and in 13 years among adults 18-49 (since ABC's ``Indiana Jones Chronicles'' in 1992).

She is known to American audiences for her role as Dr.  and Isaiah Washington.

Best movie contenders are ``Kill Bill - Vol. 2,'' ``The Incredibles,'' ``Spider-Man 2,'' ``Ray'' and ``Napoleon Dynamite.''

MTV has added two new categories this year: best frightened performance and best video game based on a movie, which join such races as best fight, best kiss and best action sequence.
