 helms Oscar

Looks like Oscar night belongs to Gil Cates - again. Cates' agreement to produce the 2005 telecast of the 77th annual Academy Awards follows an apparent pattern: He works it one year, then seems plenty relieved to pass it up the next, then returns to one of live television's most grueling assignments.

This will be a record 12th Oscarcast since 1990 for the director/producer of such films as ``I Never Sang for My Father'' and the TV movie ``Call Me Anna,'' based on Patty Duke's autobiography. The 77th Oscars airs Feb. 27 from the Kodak Theatre on ABC ABC

Grammy inflation

Things you can set your clock by each year - rising gas prices, skyrocketing real estate, higher box office grosses - and more Grammys. Nominees for next year's music-biz trophy fest will be announced in 107 separate categories Dec. 7 at the Henry Fonda Theater.

Four new trophies have been added for surround-sound album, electronic/dance album, gospel performance and Hawaiian music album. That means, considering there are five nominees in each category, at least one shopper in every Ralphs checkout line is probably up for a Grammy. The 47th annual awards ceremony takes place Feb. 13 at Staples Center.
