St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church - The annual Fern Ridge Beef Pit Barbeque will be Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the church park next to Veneta City Park, 25181 E. Broadway. More than 1,500 pounds of beef will be cooked. Raffle tickets for cash prizes, live music, silent auction, bingo, games and dinner. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for children. Central Lutheran Church Organ Concert - A. ElRay Stewart-Cook will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church at 1857 Potter St. in observance of the 30th anniversary of the Brombaugh Organ Concert Series. The concert will include music by Bach, Buxtehude, Alain and Durufle. Free-will offering. 345-0395.

Countryside Christian Fellowship - A worship concert with the Countryside Band will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Coburg Community Park gazebo in Coburg. 485-3877 or www.countrysidefellowship.com.

Ahavas Torah - The congregation will hold a celebration and rededication of a repaired Torah from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at its synagogue, 3800 Ferry St. The Torah was vandalized earlier this year. Speakers include Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy. Traditional Jewish music, refreshments. 334-6772.

Congolese Lecture - Mayal Tshiabwila from Kinshasa, Congo, will speak about his country's social, political and economic challenges at 7 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, 1166 Oak St. He will discuss his work with the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights and the free literacy school he operates for homeless children and single mothers. Church Women United Coos Bay - "Standing Up For Human Rights" is the theme of a worship service to be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay at 438 Elrod St. (541) 888-4946 or (541)756-6627.

St. Mary's Parish Center Fish Fry - The fish fry will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the center, 85060 Highway 101 in Florence. Requested donations of $6 for adults, $3.50 for ages 6 to 10, free for 5 or younger. Take-outs available.

Immanuel Church - A widows' monthly meeting will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 4 at the church, 2533 Crescent Ave. Open to all widows. 342-1911.

People in the news

New Life Church - The church at 2080 19th St. in Springfield has hired Brent Wagner as its youth pastor and Earl Faunce as its children's pastor. Wagner, from Southern California, began work this past week and Faunce, from Vancouver, Wash., will begin his new job Monday. Special guest on Sunday will be Jeff Swaim, director of Convoy of Hope, which provides disaster relief around the world. Sunday services begin at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. 746-1291.

Association of Free Lutheran Congregations - The Rev. Elden Nelson of Rockford, Minn., who served Spencer Creek Lutheran Church in Eugene from 1973-76, has been elected to a three-year term as president of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations. Nelson previously served as the group's vice-president and assistant to the president. The election occurred at the group's annual conference in Sioux Falls, S.D.
