Neighborhood Block Party - Emerald Bible Fellowship will hold a Neighborhood Block Party today from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot at 1855 Cal Young Road. Shelly James Music Box will provide live music from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free food, crafts, games, garage sale items, face painting, petting zoo, car wash. All events free. Information: 485-2301.

Eastside Faith Center - The center at 95 Centennial Loop will hold its sixth annual Community Outdoor Service and Kids' Fair on Sunday. The celebration service will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a picnic and fair, with carnival booths and prizes. Information: 345-0825.

Garden Way Church - The church at 231 N. Troop Prayer Vigil vigil (vĭj`əl) [Lat.,=watch], in Christian calendars, eve of a feast, a day of penitential preparation. In ancient times worshipers gathered for vespers before a great feast and then waited outside the church until dawn for the liturgy (Mass).  - A 24-hour prayer vigil for U.S. troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, especially members of the 162nd Infantry of the Oregon National Guard, will begin at noon Sunday at Ebbert Memorial United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism). , 532 C St. in Springfield. Event is nonpolitical. Church sanctuary will be open through noon Monday, with church staff on hand. Sanctuary is wheelchair accessible. Information: 746-3513 or 937-3435.

Springfield Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - The fellowship will discuss "The Ethical Need for Physicians and Others to Assist with Torture" when it meets Sunday at 5 p.m. at 1072 Main St. in Springfield. Coffee, child care available. Free. Information: 988-0277.

Eugene Buddhist Priory - The priory at 85415 Teague Loop will hold an orientation to Buddhist practice next Saturday, Sept. 4, from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The orientation includes meditation meditation, religious discipline in which the mind is focused on a single point of reference. It may be a means of invoking divine grace, as in the contemplation by Christian mystics of a spiritual theme, question, or problem; or it may be a means of attaining  instruction, introduction to scriptures and ceremonies, and a class on daily life practice.
