 Lutheran Church - A 50th anniversary celebration banquet will be today at 6:30 p.m. at the Spencer Creek Grange, corner of McBeth Rd. and Lorane Hwy. The celebration will continue Sunday with a festive service using "The Service Book and Hymnal" and hymns from the 1956 service of dedication. An open house will follow from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a light luncheon and refreshments. Tickets $25 for catered dinner buffet tonight. Information: 686-0583.

Unity of the Valley - A Taize service for healing and wholeness will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church, 39th and Hilyard. Taize is from the tradition of the Taize spiritual community in France, and the heart of the service is the singing and music. The laying-on of hands is done for those who wish it during the service. Awakening Vocations - The fall session of an eight-week series, "Discerning God's Calling in Lay Life," presented by Mary Sharon Moore, begins Monday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and continues Oct. 9, 16, and 30. The course repeats Tuesdays Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 31 at the same time. The winter session begins Jan. 8 and Jan. 9. The series offers a theology of vocation to help lay men and women make sense of God's calling in their lives. Moore, a Catholic speaker, writer, and teacher, has ministered in parishes and through her own workshop ministry, Awakening Vocations, to Christian communities throughout the Upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. Central Presbyterian Church Located on the northeast corner of Brazos and Bois d'Arc (now Eighth Street), Central Presbyterian Church in Austin Texas traces its roots to the organization of the first Presbyterian church in Austin on Sunday, October 13, 1839. McKenzie Valley Presbyterian Church - A six-week writing class, "Telling Your Story," led by co-pastor George Furniss, begins Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the church, 88393 Walterville Loop, Walterville. Furniss is an experienced leader of life review groups. Participants will select and write on key life events. Each session addresses a separate topic so attendance at all meetings is not required. St. Mary's Parish Center - A fish fry will be 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church, 85060 Highway 101, Florence. The menu includes clam chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. Valley Covenant Church - Ken Myers will present several lectures during the 17th Church & Culture Conference, "Not a Private Savior: Honoring Christ's Rule in All of Life," Friday Oct. 8 at the church, 3636 West 18th Ave. Lectures are as follows: 7 p.m. Friday, "Consumers in a Hurry: Mass Media and the Shape of Personal Identity"; 10 a.m. Oct 7, "Faithful Stewards or Terrestrial Gods?  - Yagna (sacred fire ceremony) for World Peace will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 7 on private property in southeast Eugene. The ceremony will be officiated by long-time residents and priests of Haidiakhandi Universal Ashram in Crestone, Colo. Yagna is an ancient ceremony from the Vedic (ancient Hindu) tradition in which portions of the five elements five elements,
n.pl fire, water, earth, wood, and metal; in Chinese medicine, each of these five components is used to organize phenomena for use in clinical applications. Each of the elements corresponds to a specific function (i.e.
