 - Observance of the Jewish High Holy Days will begin today with a Havdallah and S'lichot service at 9 p.m. at the temple, 2550 Portland St. An Erev Rosh Hashana service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Shedd, 868 High St. Other services at the temple include a Rosh Hashana morning service at 9 a.m. Thursday, with a children's service for ages 2-4 also at 9 a.m., followed by a service for children ages 5-7 at 10 a.m. and service for children ages 8-12 at 11 a.m. Thursday's events also include a Tashlich ritual at 4 p.m. and evening service at 7:30 p.m. A Second Day service will be held Friday at 9 a.m., and an Erev Shabbat Shuva service at 7:30 p.m. Torah study Torah study is the study by Jewish people of the Torah, Tanakh, Talmud, responsa, rabbinic literature and similar works, all of which are Judaism's religious texts, for the purpose of the mitzvah ("commandment") of Torah study itself, meaning study for religious (as opposed to  will begin at 10 a.m. next Saturday, Sept. 18, followed by a Shabbat Shuva morning service at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration required for child care for Erev Rosh Hashana and Rosh Hashana morning services. Grace Lutheran Church - The church at East 18th Avenue and Hilyard Street will hold a single service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday followed by a church picnic. Dunk tank A dunk tank, also known as a dunking booth or dunking machine, is an attraction mainly used in funfairs, fundraisers, and personal parties. Basically, a dunk tank consists of a large tank of water, over which a seat is suspended. , bean bag toss, other games, along with fall class registration. Springfield Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - University of Oregon law professor Carolyn Forell, co-author with Donna Matthews of "Law of Her Own: The Reasonable Woman as a Measure of Man," will be guest speaker when the fellowship meets Sunday at 5 p.m. at 1072 Main St. in Springfield. Forell will discuss her book and how it came to be written. Child care available. Information: 988-0277.

Valley River Baptist Church - Missionary Walter White will speak at 9 a.m. during the Sunday School Sunday school, institution for instruction in religion and morals, usually conducted in churches as part of the church organization but sometimes maintained by other religious or philanthropic bodies.

In England during the 18th cent.
 hour and Carol Snider of Medford will perform a sacred music concert at the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday when the church at 1145 Willagillespie Road holds its fall kick-off. A potluck picnic in the church backyard will follow at 1 p.m. Also, the Women's Association will meet today at 9:30 a.m., and the White Cross group will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday to sew and share sack lunches and fellowship. Westside Baptist Church - The church at 1310 Echo Hollow Road will expand to two worship services - at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. - beginning Sunday. Sunday School will be offered at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. Information: 689-6325.

St. Mark Christian Methodist Episcopal Church The Christian Methodist Epsicopal Church is a historically black denomination within the broader context of Methodism. The group was organized in 1870 when several black ministers, with the full support of their white counterparts in the former Methodist Episcopal Church, South,  - The church will celebrate its 56th anniversary at 4 p.m. Sunday. New Vision Community Church - The church, which meets at Clear Lake Elementary School elementary school: see school.  on Barger Avenue, has changed its Sunday worship time to 10:30 a.m. Continental breakfast and fellowship time precede service.

Central Presbyterian Church Located on the northeast corner of Brazos and Bois d'Arc (now Eighth Street), Central Presbyterian Church in Austin Texas traces its roots to the organization of the first Presbyterian church in Austin on Sunday, October 13, 1839. That event, conducted by Rev.  - Pastor Uriel Tercero from Condega, Nicaragua, will preach at 8:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the church, East 14th Avenue and Patterson Street. Church members first met Tercero on a mission trip in June 2003. He will also visit social service agencies, schools and local events.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church Episcopal Church, Anglican church of the United States. Its separate existence as an American ecclesiastical body with its own episcopate began in 1789. Doctrine and Organization
 - Father Nigel Wright, vicar of St. Anges Parish in Australia, will be the speaker at a Sunday symposium at the church parish hall, East 13th Avenue and Pearl Street. Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m. and the program will run from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wright will lead an open dialogue on the Anglican Church in Australia, Anglican unity and other topics. Also, the church will hold its second annual parking lot sale next Saturday, Sept. 18, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The service combines songs, prayers and silent meditation in the tradition of the interfaith Taize monastic community in France. Those who wish may receive the laying-on of hands as a symbol of spiritual blessing. Also, a "Removal of Obstacles" chanting service will be held at the church at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
