MAGIC TIME: It's season-opener time for classical buffs.

Saturday, the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 Symphony kicks off its concert calendar at Pierce College with an intriguing program that includes ``The Sorcerer's Apprentice.''

The concert also features pieces by Debussy, Ernesto Cavallini and Valley composer Rocco diGiovanni. Music director James Domine conducts the orchestra, which consists of professionals and some students.

The Pierce College Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre.  is at 6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills. CURRAN EVENTS: Guitarist-singer Nick Curran emerged from the vibrant Dallas blues scene with a twist of rockabilly.

Tonight, Curran brings his ear-catching set of shuffles, ballads and slow blues to Cozy's Bar & Grill.

Curran's debut, ``Fixin' Your Head,'' is being hailed as one of the best Texas blues efforts of the year.

SWEPT AWAY: Walt Disney's classic ``Fantasia fantasia (făntā`zhə) [Ital.,=fancy], musical composition not restricted to a formal design, but constructed freely in the manner of an improvisation. In the 16th and 17th cent. ,'' with its cartoon magic, may have made Paul Dukas' ``The Sorcerer's Apprentice'' a popular composition.

But it's no Mickey Mouse music.

Based on the Goethe poem ``Der Zauberlehrling,'' ``The Sorcerer's Apprentice'' has remained the composer's best-known work since his death in 1935. On Saturday, the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Domine conjures the magic of this popular piece in a concert at Pierce College Performing Arts Theater.

Clarinetist Steven Piazza will perform Rocco di Giovanni's ``Aria for Clarinet and Orchestra'' and Ernesto Cavallini's ``Adagio a·da·gio

YOU'RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT: Continuing a tour of college campuses, Lynn Manning's one-man play ``Weights'' arrives Saturday morning at the California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , Performing Arts Center, 18111 Nordhoff St. It plays at 11 a.m.

There will also be a performance at 7 Wednesday night at Southwest Community College in Los Angeles, 1600 W. Imperial Highway, in L.A. Both performances are free.

In ``Weights,'' Manning takes audiences through his upbringing in South Central Los Angeles, including the shooting that deprived him of his sight. The play has twice been a part of the Mark Taper Forum's Taper, Too series.

'MISERABLES' LOVES COMPANY: A life without ``Miserables'' entertainment is apparently a life not worth living.

Hence the return, for the umpteenth time, of ``Les Miserables,'' the mega musical from Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg, which arrives at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, 300 E. Green St. in Pasadena, through Sunday.
