THE BEST, AND THE REST, NIGHT BY NIGHT.Byline: - David Kronke MONDAY: BEST: NBC's ``Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'' (debuting Sept. 18) offers the season's class cast (Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford, Amanda Peet, D.L. Hughley, Sarah Paulson and more) and ``The West Wing'' creator Aaron Sorkin in an examination of how TV should be meaningful for viewers. (Shows about TV are always an iffy if·fy adj. if·fi·er, if·fi·est Informal Doubtful; uncertain: an iffy proposition. [From if. proposition for viewers, however.) ``Heroes'' (Sept. 25) looks to be a massive geek hit, a drama about disparate individuals with unique superpowers and those who want to destroy them. WORST: ``Runaway'' (The CW, Sept. 25) is an uninspired ``Fugitive''-style melodrama about an entire family on the lam after its patriarch (Donnie Wahlberg) is framed for murdering his mistress. Sorry, Dad, you're on your own. TUESDAY: BEST: ``Standoff'' (Fox, already premiered) concerns a hostage-interrogation team who works together both professionally and personally -- with agreeable chemistry between its principals. ``Friday Night Lights'' (NBC NBC in full National Broadcasting Co. Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network. , Oct. 3) takes a melodramatic, myth-making look at the high-stakes world of Texas high-school football. WORST: None. WEDNESDAY: BEST: ``30 Rock'' (NBC, Oct. 11), the goofier sitcom version of ``Studio 60,'' comes from former ``Saturday Night Live'' head writer Tina Fey, who also stars. WORST: ``Justice'' (Fox, already debuted) is a tired legal drama about a high-powered law team striving to exonerate loathsome dirtbags. ``20 Good Years'' (NBC, Oct. 11) is as over-the-top as sitcoms are allowed to get these days. THURSDAY: BEST: ``Ugly Betty'' (ABC ABC in full American Broadcasting Co. Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928. , Sept. 28), starring America Ferrera as a lovable innocent plunged into the cutthroat fashion world, is the season's biggest charmer. ``Shark'' (CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. , Sept. 21), starring James Woods as a charismatic if arrogant attorney who shifts his alliances from defending appalling people to prosecuting them, could emerge as the season's biggest hit given its post-``CSI'' time slot. WORST: ``Six Degrees'' (ABC, Sept. 21), in its examination of disparate souls seeking meaning in New York City New York City: see New York, city. New York City City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S. , is laudably ambitious but crushingly pretentious, despite the presence of such respected stars as Campbell Scott and Hope Davis. FRIDAY: Best/Worst: Despite eccentric touches, Anne Heche's self-help relationship guru in ``Men in Trees'' (ABC, debuting Tuesday, before its time-slot premiere Friday) isn't quite as winning as the producers want her to be. SUNDAY: BEST: Oddly enough, it might just be ``Sports Action Team'' (Channel 4, today), a quirky little syndicated show following ``Sunday Night Football Sunday Night Football can refer to one of three National Football League television series:
Dog Bites Man was a partially improvised comedy television show on Comedy Central that aired in Summer 2006. It begins airing on The Comedy Channel in Australia in June 2007. .'' WORST: The large family portrayed in ``Brothers & Sisters'' (ABC, Sept. 24) feels utterly synthetic, their alternating banter and bickering sounds like it comes from a computer program that's a cheap foreign knockoff knock·off n. Informal An unauthorized copy or imitation, as of designer clothing: "the place to go for quality knockoffs" Women's Wear Daily.
