THE ATLANTA COCA-COLA BOTTLING COMPANY INTRODUCES
                RECYCLED PLASTIC SOFT DRINK BOTTLES
ATLANTA, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company today introduced 2-liter plastic soft drink bottles made with recycled plastic soft drink bottles, bringing the environmentally innovative package home to Georgia.
The Peach State rollout involves plastic bottles of Coca-Cola classic, caffeine-free Coca-Cola classic, diet Coke and caffeine-free diet Coke made with a blend of 25 percent recycled plastic resin and 75 percent "virgin" resin. Consumers in Atlanta, Macon, Athens, Valdosta and nearby communities can identify these bottles with special labels, point of purchase and other communications materials.
"This is a step in the right direction for plastic soft drink packaging," said John Beal, area vice president of sales for The Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a division of Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: CCE). "Using recycled material in our plastic soft drink bottles is in line with what the Coca-Cola system has accomplished with our aluminum and glass containers."
The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) and Charlotte, N.C.-based Hoechst Celanese Fibers and Film Group developed the recycling process which regenerates resin by breaking down plastic soft drink bottle polymer into its original components, purifying and blending the recycled resin with "virgin" resin to make new bottles.
"More than 210 million pounds of plastic soft drink bottles are recycled annually through more than 3,500 curbside, buy-back and drop-off collection programs around the country," Beal added. "The recycled plastic bottle is being introduced to assure long-term markets for plastic soft drink bottles with the expansion of collection programs that include plastic."
Other introductions of the recycled plastic bottle include Alabama, Arkansas, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, central Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi. Last month, The Coca-Cola Company also began new market tests for recycled plastic bottles in Westchester County, N.Y.; Boston; San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
The Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company, an operating unit of Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc., produces and distributes the soft drink products of The Coca-Cola Company.
