THE 1998 SOFT*LETTER EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION SURVEY.

How much should executive pay reflect a company's stock market performance? So far, the PC software industry's collective answer has been, "a lot." The highest-paid executives at 62 public companies last year took home $196 million in total compensation, and a hefty heft·y

But there are troubling signs that for many companies the option game has become an increasingly unpredictable lottery lottery, scheme for distributing prizes by lot or other method of chance selection to persons who have paid for the opportunity to win. The term is not applicable when lots are drawn without payment by the interested parties to determine some matter, e.g. . As this year's Executive Compensation Survey goes to press, a single day of craziness on Wall Street--triggered by events that have almost nothing to do with the performance of individual managers--has just wiped out a year's worth of the "incentive" rewards that many executives expected to earn, or pushed existing options so deep under water that employees can see almost no hope for any eventual payoff.
