THE 1998 SOFT*LETTER EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION SURVEY.How much should executive pay reflect a company's stock market performance? So far, the PC software industry's collective answer has been, "a lot." The highest-paid executives at 62 public companies last year took home $196 million in total compensation, and a hefty heft·y adj. heft·i·er, heft·i·est 1. Of considerable weight; heavy. 2. Rugged and powerful. See Synonyms at heavy. 3. 55% of this amount represented so-called so-called adj. 1. Commonly called: "new buildings ... in so-called modern style" Graham Greene. 2. If the job of top management is to build wealth, clearly some executives are getting rich for doing exactly what their shareholders want. But there are troubling signs that for many companies the option game has become an increasingly unpredictable lottery lottery, scheme for distributing prizes by lot or other method of chance selection to persons who have paid for the opportunity to win. The term is not applicable when lots are drawn without payment by the interested parties to determine some matter, e.g. . As this year's Executive Compensation Survey goes to press, a single day of craziness on Wall Street--triggered by events that have almost nothing to do with the performance of individual managers--has just wiped out a year's worth of the "incentive" rewards that many executives expected to earn, or pushed existing options so deep under water that employees can see almost no hope for any eventual payoff. Worse, the distribution of option gains is arguably ar·gu·a·ble adj. 1. Open to argument: an arguable question, still unresolved. 2. That can be argued plausibly; defensible in argument: three arguable points of law. so lopsided lop·sid·ed adj. 1. Heavier, larger, or higher on one side than on the other. 2. Sagging or leaning to one side. 3. that the connection between performance and reward has become disappointingly dis·ap·point·ing adj. Not up to expectations or hopes: a disappointing test score; finished the marathon in a disappointing 12th place. tenuous tenuous Intensive care adjective Referring to a 'touch-and-go,' uncertain, or otherwise 'iffy' clinical situation . Out of 305 executives in this year's compensation survey, only 60 collected any option money--and 78% of that payout pay·out n. 1. The act or an instance of paying out. 2. A percentage of corporate earnings that is paid as dividends to shareholders. went to just ten executives in six companies. Even more striking is the fact that one individual, Bill Larson William Harry Larson (born October 7, 1953 in Greenfield, Iowa) was an American football tight end in the NFL for six different teams. He played college football for Colorado State University. of Network Associates, collected $31 million (37%) of the total 1997 option pool; for everyone else, the median option gain was a more modest $145,000. Are these the kind of odds that inspire serious career risks and superhuman su·per·hu·man adj. 1. Above or beyond the human; preternatural or supernatural. 2. Beyond ordinary or normal human ability, power, or experience: "soldiers driven mad by superhuman misery" effort? We suspect not. Of course, the payout from conventional salary and bonus compensation also produces some extravagant ex·trav·a·gant adj. 1. Given to lavish or imprudent expenditure: extravagant members of the imperial court. 2. Exceeding reasonable bounds: extravagant demands. winners. Last year, nine executives collected more than a million dollars in W-2 income, compared to just three who topped the million-dollar level last year. Ironically i·ron·ic also i·ron·i·cal adj. 1. Characterized by or constituting irony. 2. Given to the use of irony. See Synonyms at sarcastic. 3. , it seems that one of the best ways lately to break into the ranks of the paycheck elite isn't is·n't Contraction of is not. isn't is not isn't be by doing a great job --it's by losing a job and collecting a fat severance The act of dividing, or the state of being divided. The term severance has unique meanings in different branches of the law. Courts use the term in both civil and criminal litigation in two ways: first, when dividing a lawsuit into two or more parts, and second, when settlement. Three executives reached this year's "Top Paychecks" list largely because of the size of their severance payments; at the same time, the year's best-paid chief executive, George George, river, c.345 mi (560 km) long, rising in a lake on the Quebec-Labrador boundary, E Canada. A.D.), all visible with the unaided eye, were ranked on a brightness scale such that the brightest stars were of 1st magnitude and the are far from standard, of course, but there is clearly a high turnover rate among the industry's best-paid executives. Only about 60% of the 305 executives in this year's report have spent at least two years on the job; 20% collected less than a full year's pay during the current fiscal year, either because they were newly hired or else left the company during the year. What happens to employees who stick around for at least two years? Again, there's a certain amount of unpredictability to their pay, largely because of year-to-year differences in bonus and other non-salary payments. Sixty-five percent of two-year employees took home more money in 1997 than in 1996; 35% saw their total annual income decline. Curiously cu·ri·ous adj. 1. Common sense would suggest that we should see at least some rough connection between executive pay trends and marketplace results. But once again the connection seems to be rather elusive.
