THE (SHARK) BOY WONDER.

Byline: - Bob Strauss

What's cooler than having a dad who makes the ``Spy Kids'' movies?

How about him making a movie you invented?

Racer Max Rodriguez, who turned 8 in April, shares a writing credit on ``The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.'' His multihyphenate father, Robert, developed the film from dreams, drawings and other ideas Racer had about a kid whose fantasy world comes to sudden, realistic life.

``I thought they looked cool,'' Racer says of seeing the characters he created come to life on the big screen. ``They looked better than I imagined. Bigger, too.''

For Robert, who last collaborated with comics artist A comics artist is an artist working within the comics medium. The term may refer to any number of artists who contribute to produce a work in the comics form, from those who oversee all aspects of the work to those who contribute only a part.  Frank Miller on the adults-only ``Sin City,'' turning his son's concepts into a movie was fun. ``The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was a great idea,'' Robert says. ``But the pressure was on. If I blew it, I'd hear about it for the rest of my life!

``He helped me get away from what I usually do, and toward a more pure, child's viewpoint,'' Pop adds. ``Racer's so much like me when I was that age, it's like going back in a time machine and being 8 again, getting these ideas straight from the source.''

Racer and his brothers Rocket, Rebel and Rogue Rogue, river, c.200 mi (320 km) long, rising in SW Oreg., in the Cascade Range N of Crater Lake. That enabled even more fine-tuning from a child's point-of-view.

``Race was there on the set,'' Robert says. ``I would show him dailies at the end, show him stuff as we were editing it together. He'd read things as I was writing it and throw in ideas. He was sort of my Frank Miller on this.''

Was it cool to help make a movie while still in second grade?

``Yes!'' Racer affirms while drawing a three-headed creature for an inquisitive in·quis·i·tive

But does that mean he'll go into the family business once he's grown up?

``Maybe,'' Racer says, with a shrug. ``Or maybe I'll be a marine biologist marine biologist
