THANK YOU.BEFORE closing the curtain on 2002, the Daily News would like to once again acknowledge and thank those readers who took the time to write to us and made Your Opinions, the letters to the editor columns, one of the liveliest and best read parts of the paper. The list of published letter writers, slightly more than 2,000, grew by more than 25 percent this year, up from around 1,400 in 2001. As usual, we received about 10 times as many letters as we had room to publish - one of the reasons we ask you to keep your letters short. We tried to publish a cross section that represented what our readers were saying. We also tried to give space to the lone voices crying out in the wilderness. The letter writers were rowdy - as usual - starting off the year with a debate on the war in Afghanistan and ending it arguing about the righteousness Righteousness See also Virtuousness. Many writers got into personal spats spat 1 v. A past tense and a past participle of spit1. spat 2 n. pl. spat or spats 1. with other writers. And that was OK, too. Your Opinions is for your opinions, and they frequently clash. By far the most written-about subject of the year was the proposed Valley secession. Candidates as well as voters touted their positions, and more than a few paid consultants dropped us a line. Along the way, a lot of people - public officials and letter writers, too - got verbally disciplined in the columns. Mayor James Hahn For the Iowa politician, see . He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991. also got their fair share of abuse. The Daily News got smacked across the knuckles with the ruler, too. We'd like to thank you letter writers for speaking out and letting us know what you thought really mattered.
