THANK YOU, READERS.AS the year 2003 comes to an end, the Daily News again would like to acknowledge and thank its readers who felt strongly enough about issues and subjects to write us and made Your Opinions, the letters to the editor columns, one of the liveliest parts of the paper. The list of published letter writers increased by slightly more than 10 percent in 2003, to a total of about 2,200. We tried to publish a cross section of the opinions representing what our readers were saying. We also tried to give space to the individuals voicing unusual subjects and issues. As you may have noticed, we prefer to leave our letters mostly unfettered, except by the common rules of decency de·cen·cy n. pl. de·cen·cies 1. The state or quality of being decent; propriety. 2. Conformity to prevailing standards of propriety or modesty. 3. decencies a. and certain legal boundaries. We believe it allows for a freer flow of speech and ideas. As usual, our letter writers were roisterous, irked and outraged. They began the year arguing the merits of a war in Iraq, and they are ending the year still debating the issue. Along the way, they touched on a thousand topics, ranging from the Department of Water and Power funding of a motor scooter motor scooter: see motorcycle. enterprise and the defeat of secession secession, in art secession, in art, any of several associations of progressive artists, especially those in Munich, Berlin, and Vienna, who withdrew from the established academic societies or exhibitions. to Bush's tax cut, Ahmanson Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. Along with Doe v. Bolton, this decision legalized abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy. and the Second Amendment. But by far the favorite topics were the recall of Gov. Gray Davis and the rise and victory of Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ] . We'd like to thank you letter writers for taking the time to speak out for what mattered most for you. We tried to keep track of the contributors to Your Opinions, and we begin publishing your names today. We will continue to publish them through the end of the week, along with the year's best cartoons from View From the Valley by Patrick O'Connor Patrick J.
