Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - A Valencia company that creates advanced systems for the defense and aerospace industries has been awarded an $18 million contract to produce a system that steers air-launched missiles toward targets.

Textron's control actuation system controls missile direction by adjusting rocket thrust and tail fins, officials said. Once the missile locks on the target, the fins will steer the missile toward the target, regardless of where it flies.

``Why this is so revolutionary is this thing can fly backward,'' said Joe Padula, Textron communications manager.

The company, established in the Valencia Industrial Center in 1969, spent four years developing the system for the performance missiles used by F-18 and F-16 fighter planes, Padula said.

The AIM-9X version of the Sidewinder missile offers pilots great versatility and agility, officials said.

The missile has also already received worldwide attention, with more than 13 countries expressing interest in the weapon system, officials said. They expect that international demand could be similar to U.S. demand.
