Texas is a delightful mix of colorful cultures and diverse destinations that make a powerhouse place for meetings. From high-tech Austin and cowboy-chic Dallas to booming Houston and the seaside island of South Padre, Texas offers planners a world of choice in facilities, accommodations, and atmosphere.

AUSTIN

TEXAS CAPITAL AWAITS NEW FACILITIES

The next couple of years are sure to be memorable for Austin. Having emerged as a prime meetings destination since the Austin Convention Center Austin Convention Center is a multi-purpose convention center located in Austin, Texas, USA. The building is also home to the Austin Toros basketball team with a seating capacity of 3,200.  opened eight years ago, the Texas capital will take its meetings package to a new level when the convention center's $110 million expansion debuts in spring 2002.

The expansion doubles the size of the current center and includes a new 45,600-square-foot, column-free ballroom that will be the largest in the state. The project also includes the addition of 18 new meeting rooms and two, new, column-free exhibit halls. When completed, the expanded center will offer 290,000 square feet of exhibit space in five halls and 47 meeting rooms encompassing 54,730 square feet.

An 800-room headquarters hotel under a Hilton flag will open in late 2003 across from the convention center. The city already has nearly 4,000 downtown hotel rooms near the convention center, as well as the wildly popular Sixth Street entertainment district, a six-block stretch of restaurants, bars, and music clubs.

The convention center expansion isn't the only large function space coming on line in Austin. The new Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, is a museum owned by the State of Texas dedicated to telling "The Story of Texas." It is named after former Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock, who championed its creation. The museum is located at 30.2802°, -97.  opened in April with 41,253 square feet of space for private events, including the grand domed lobby, which can seat 725 people for banquets and can accommodate 1,500 people for receptions. The facility will become Austin's new civic center, replacing the City Coliseum and Palmer Auditorium, which will be renovated into a performing arts center.

As Austin's inventory of event facilities grows, so does its hotel community. The Omni Austin Hotel also recently converted five floors of condominiums into 34 suites, adding to an inventory of 372 rooms. The Omni also provides 22,000 square feet of meeting space in 13 rooms.

HOUSTON

POISED FOR MAJOR EXPANSION

Always a great convention destination, Houston will soon give meeting planners big new reasons to convene in the city. The expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center The George R. IRVING

IRVING CONVENTION CENTER ON FAST TRACK

Plans are on the fast track to open a new convention center in Irving, and for good reason. Located in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, a title designated by the U.S. Census as of 2003, encompasses 12 counties within the U.S. state of Texas. The metropolitan area is further divided into two metropolitan divisions: Dallas–Plano–Irving  adjacent to the DFW International Airport, Irving's meetings market share is poised to explode with the addition of a new convention center and adjacent headquarters hotel by 2003.

The new center will be located in the Las Colinas Urban Center, a world-renowned business address in the heart of the Las Colinas planned community. Plans call for the development of the new convention center in phases. The first phase will include a minimum of 100,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 25,000-square-foot ballroom, 15,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and 175,000 square feet of support space. The adjacent headquarters hotel-also part of phase one--is anticipated to be 500 guest rooms and at least a four-star quality property.

Ultimately, the center will encompass 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, 45,000 square feet of ballroom space, 60,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and 320,000 square feet of support space.

Irving already has the hotel infrastructure to support a new convention center. With more than 70 hotels providing more than 11,000 guest rooms and 200,000 square feet of function space, Irving offers more hotel rooms than any other city in the entire metroplex except Dallas.

In January, the elegant Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas unveiled a multimillion, 11,000-square-foot expansion that included the 8,000-square-foot Four Seasons Ballroom. The new ballroom's exterior is seamlessly connected to the existing conference center of the 357-room resort.

Last summer, the 364-room Dallas Marriott Las Colinas opened in Irving. The new hotel added more than 21,000 square feet of function space to Irving's meetings package, including the 10,374-square-foot grand ballroom that can accommodate up to 870 people for banquets. The new property is located near the site of the new convention center in the Las Colinas Urban Center, home to Exxon, GTE GTE General Telephone & Electronics

IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , and Nokia.

All of Irving's hotels are no more than 10 minutes from DFW International Airport, and most offer complimentary shuttle service for added convenience. Of course, nothing could be more convenient than traveling to and from Las Colinas via DFW International, where nearly 2,300 daily flights to 150 destinations worldwide are offered by 28 carriers.

Long revered as the home of Texas Stadium and the world-famous Dallas Cowboys, Irving has emerged as a center of professional hockey and golf as well.
