TEXAS INSTRUMENTS JOINS EPA'S ENERGY STAR PROGRAM

DALLAS, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) and other U.S. computer manufacturers are teaming up to raise awareness about the potential benefits of using energy efficient computers.
President Clinton, in his Earth Day address, announced that the federal government, the largest buyer of computers in the world, is committed to purchasing only computers and printers that meet EPA Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency. The EPA's new Energy Star Program will begin marking energy-efficient PC and notebook computer products in June with a designated "Energy Star" product logo.
Texas Instruments, a leading developer of three-volt (low energy) products, joined the program as an ally in April 1993 to contribute its expertise in design, manufacturing and technology integration and work toward greater energy efficiency in the computer industry.
"There is no reason for PCs to consume as much power as they do when the technology exists to lower this power consumption without sacrificing performance," said Steve Gough, TI's EPA Energy Star Program representative. "The Energy Star product logo will let consumers and government agencies know that the products they purchase meet the program's energy efficiency requirements."
Today, most desktop computers operate between 60 to 150 watts and above in active mode. The EPA's Energy Star Program requires a standard of less than 75 watts in active mode and less than 35 watts in standby mode. TI manufactures computer components such as the TI486, 3-volt microprocessors that will allow PC manufacturers to meet and exceed these requirements for energy efficiency.
"These new personal computers will save the equivalent of enough electricity to power Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine each year and save rate payers up to $2 billion in annual electricity bills," said Brian Johnson, EPA Energy Star Program manager. "At present, 26 leading manufacturers who sell about 50 percent of all U.S. personal computers, and seven companies representing 80 percent of the U.S. laser printer market have signed agreements with the EPA to become Energy Star partners."
In addition to TI, other companies who have announced support of the Energy Star Program include IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Apple, Unisys, NCR, Smith Corona, Cyrix, Zenith Data Systems, Compuadd, Digital Equipment, and Intel.
NOTE: Texas Instruments Incorporated, headquartered in Dallas, is a high-technology company with sales or manufacturing operations in more than 30 countries. TI products and services include semiconductors, defense electronics systems, software productivity tools, computers and peripheral products, custom engineering and manufacturing services, electrical controls, metallurgical materials, and consumer electronic products.
