TEXACO TO RECEIVE MMS SAFETY AWARD

CAMARILLO, Calif., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has announced that Texaco Exploration and Production Inc. is the winner of the Pacific Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Santa Maria District Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE).
The SAFE Program recognizes and commends operating companies that expend extra effort to conduct their operations in a safe and pollution-free manner. "This award honors Texaco for the exemplary manner in which they have conducted production operations on Platform Harvest, offshore in the Santa Maria Basin," said Dr. J. Lisle Reed, regional director of the MMS Pacific OCS Region, whose offices are in Camarillo.
"Texaco's commitment to human safety and protection of the environment is demonstrated by their innovative actions. The company has placed a fast response boat on Platform Harvest and continually trains employees in ocean rescue operations. That training is consistent with that received by the U.S. Coast Guard," Reed said. "In an emergency, such as a downed helicopter, Texaco is well prepared to carry out rescue operations in the Santa Barbara Channel, not just for their own employees, but for anyone in distress.
"Texaco also goes that extra mile," Reed added, "by providing resources to the Channel Islands National Park Service. They are currently working with the Park Service to clean storm debris off the beaches of San Miguel Island."
Reed said that during the six-month evaluation period, July 1 - Dec. 31, 1992, MMS inspected Platform Harvest's production operations 29 times. "The result of each inspection clearly confirmed that personnel are safety conscious and knowledgeable of operating regulations," said Reed.
The MMS SAFE citation and plaque will be presented to Texaco during the American Petroleum Institute's Coastal Chapter's Energy Information Night on May 19, in Ventura, Calif.
