TEXACO GASIFICATION POWER SYSTEM SELECTED FOR 600-MEGAWATT POWER PROJECT IN
 ITALY
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Texaco Inc.'s (NYSE: TX) Alternate Energy group announced today that its Texaco Gasification Power System technology has been selected by ISAB SpA, the Italian petroleum refining company, for a 600-megawatt power generation facility in Italy.
The Texaco Gasification Power System integrates Texaco's gasification technology with a synthesis gas cleanup system and a combined cycle power plant. The technology, licensed to ISAB by Texaco Development Corporation (TDC), will be installed at ISAB's existing refinery in Priolo Gargallo, Sicily, Italy.
The ISAB project, planned for start-up in 1996, will gasify 17,000 barrels per day of high sulfur heavy oil residues to produce steam and hydrogen for the ISAB refinery, and electricity which will be sold to ENEL, the Italian state power authority.
"This marks the first license of the Texaco Gasification Power System in Europe," said Craig M. McLaughlin, president of TDC. "Texaco's Alternate Energy technology will allow ISAB to convert a very low value, bottom-of-the-barrel residue into electricity, steam and hydrogen in an environmentally beneficial manner."
The Texaco Gasification Process, together with a combined cycle power block, is considered an environmentally attractive method of generating electricity from hydrocarbon feedstocks such as coal, heavy oil, petroleum coke and other petroleum residues. Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are significantly lower than the amount produced by traditional processes. In addition, because of the greater efficiency of TGPS, emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are lower than the amount from other power generation technologies.
Texaco's Alternate Energy group is directing a Texaco initiative to commercialize and license a number of technologies, including the Texaco Gasification Process. Texaco is pursuing licensing and equity projects to utilize its gasification technology to improve the environment and expand cogeneration activities. The ISAB license is the seventh major Texaco gasification development announced this year.
