TERMITE control specialist Jose De La Cruz.


TERMITE termite or white ant, common name for a soft-bodied social insect of the order Isoptera. Termites are easily distinguished from ants by comparison of the base of the abdomen, which is broadly joined to the thorax in termites; in ants, there is  control specialist Jose De La Cruz de la Cruz is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning 'of The Cross.'

 had been warning non-believers for years that a certain fast-spreading fungus could damage homes even more quickly than termites.

He was finally vindicated in 1997, when scientific findings confirmed that the fungus, meruliporia incrassata, was indeed threatening wood structures across California. De La Cruz's Van Nuys business, De La Cruz Termite Control, was flooded with calls from homeowners, insurance companies and contractors as he became known as an expert on the problem.

He later renamed his company De La Cruz Wood Preservation All measures that are taken to ensure a long life of wood fall under the definition wood preservation (timber treatment). Apart from structural wood preservation measures, there are a number of different (chemical) preservatives and processes (also known as timber treatment  to reflect its new specialty. "I've been in the business since 1969. We still do termite control, but we now specialize in that particular fungus, which grows inside the walls and floors of buildings.

"I act as a consultant to the homeowner or contractor. I charge a base hourly rate of about $75, depending on how far I have to go. For the fungus-infection business I go from Chul Vista to Sacramento.

"People realize they have the problem when they see pieces of wood collapsing, or when the fungus develops a fruiting body and grows along the baseboard base·board

"It's active throughout the year but the fruiting bodies appear very heavily during May and November. Right now I'm so busy it's killing me. I'm working seven days a week sometime.

"I changed the company name because, when people think pest control, they think of chemicals.
