The award was announced during the annual AAED awards banquet A banquet is a large public meal or feast, complete with main courses and desserts. It usually serves a purpose, such as a charitable gathering, a ceremony, or a celebration. TEP was recognized for its active sponsorship of AAED events and for the involvement and contributions of two TEP employees: Pat Patton, economic development director and Larry Lucero, governmental & international relations international relations, study of the relations among states and other political and economic units in the international system. Particular areas of study within the field of international relations include diplomacy and diplomatic history, international law,  director.

Lucero completed his second two-year term on the AAED board of directors and assisted the association in conducting successful events, including visitations to the Mexican states of Sonora and Culiacan to position Arizona as an integral component in the international trade movement by bringing together business, government and industry.

Patton was the 1996-97 chair of the professional interaction committee and was elected to a two-year term on the board of directors effective immediately.

AAED was formed in 1974 by a small group of economic development professionals and business leaders dedicated to improving and diversifying Arizona's economic base. AAED advocates improving business, employment and investment opportunities, as well as the quality of life.

The association has grown to over 400 members statewide representing a large number of professions and businesses, including: architects, banking, chambers of commerce, construction, education, engineering, environmental, government, lawyers, manufacturing, real estate, business services and utilities.

AAED accomplishes its mission by extensive discussion of issues affecting Arizona's economy; promotes economic development through an interchange An interchange is a location where two things meet, usually perform some kind of exchange, and possibly go on their ways again. It is most commonly used in four contexts:
  • Transportation:
 of information and educational opportunities among its members; acts as a liaison with outside groups having the same objectives; influences legislation affecting economic development; and continually improves working relationships among its diverse membership.
