Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

QUARTZ HILL - The Quartz Hill High campus will be Tennis Tournament Central the next two weekends.

Quartz Hill girls' tennis coach Bill Lenaway is involved in running two tournaments. The Rebels host an 11-team, one-day event one-day event

a contraction of the three-day event but like that contest is aimed at selecting the best all-round horse and rider. The events usually contested are show-jumping, dressage and cross-country.
involving five Golden League teams on Saturday. Quartz Hill, Lancaster and Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  will then co-host a 145-person individual tournament for players of all levels (not just high school athletes) on Oct. 1-2 to promote the sport in the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. Saturday's tournament involves Quartz Hill, Highland, Antelope Valley, Palmdale and Knight. Also competing in the tournament are Burroughs of Ridgecrest, Alemany of Mission Hills and Moorpark.

Quartz Hill takes over a tournament that for years has been run by Palmdale.

The tournament that in previous years has been a prelude prelude (prā`ld), musical composition of no universal style, usually for the keyboard. It was originally used to precede a ceremony and later a second, often larger piece.  to league play starts a few days after this year's early start (league play opened Tuesday) to accommodate the addition of Knight to the varsity circuit.

``A lot of the (Antelope antelope, name applied to a large number of hoofed, ruminant mammals of the cattle family (Bovidae), which also includes the sheep and goats. The North American pronghorn is sometimes called an antelope, but belongs to a separate, related family (Antilocapridae). ) Valley teams here don't get a chance to play teams from down below,'' Lenaway said. ``We do, but a lot of other teams don't and I just like the idea of giving the kids up here a chance to play against some of the kids from out of the area. It's a great way to get a whole bunch of matches in just before the start of league, or a few days after league starts this year.''

Next week's tournament, which is sponsored by Rancho ran·cho

``When you're competing against teams from outside the Valley, that's a good result,'' Lenaway said.

The Rebels were led by doubles champions Renuka Rudra and Carolyn Smith, who beat Northwood of Irvine's Mariel Caillie and Kori Kurtz.

Zahra Ghorbani took the singles title for Highland, and Alex Ruiz and Kelly Manahan finished second in doubles.

``It's a good feeling for the girls to win a tournament,'' Highland coach Linda Ruiz (Alex's mother) said. ``It's a great way to start the season.''
