High boys' tennis coach Annie Kellogg would remember her team is defending its title today in the annual Spring Smash tournament.

But Kellogg admitted she barely has had time to think about it, focusing on rebuilding her young, primarily inexperienced in·ex·pe·ri·ence

The Vikings were 7-1 at this point last year and rolling toward their third consecutive Foothill League title. This season, Valencia is 3-6.

``We're getting much-needed experience,'' Kellogg said. ``We're just learning as we go. You know, you learn a lot more when you lose.''

--Long time coming: The Hart boys' tennis team is off and running toward its first Foothill League title in 16 years. Hart (6-0 overall, 1-0 in league) looks like the favorite to win the league, based on its 16-2 win over Ventura on March 11 and Thursday's 16-2 victory over Burroughs.

``It's been a long time - since 1987 - that we've had a league title,'' Hart coach Chris Mansfield said. ``I think we have a very good shot this year. We're staying focused.''

Last year, Valencia won the league again, and the Indians finished fourth in league, beaten out for third place by Canyon.

``Hart may be about where we were a couple of years ago,'' Valencia coach Annie Kellogg said. ``This year they're going to come to fruition fru·i·tion

Kellogg predicted Hart will win the Spring Smash tournament this weekend.

Hart's top player is Matthew Taoatao, one of two Southern California- ranked players - at 161st in the current standings - in the Foothill League. Taoatao will not be competing in Saturday's Spring Smash competition because he is resting to gear up for the league season.

--Off to a great start: Burbank began its dominance of Foothill League tennis in 1988, and continued it until 2001, when Valencia took over. So it's understandable that every team in the league has longed to defeat the perennial perennial, any plant that under natural conditions lives for several to many growing seasons, as contrasted to an annual or a biennial. That's exactly why Canyon's coach, Bob Gravett, sees his team's 10-8 victory over Burbank on Thursday, and not its 6-0, 1-0 record, as a sure sign that his team is going to have a successful season.

``It's quite a feat for Canyon to defeat Burbank. It's a great start to our season,'' Gravett said.
