TENNIS: SOCAL WINS TITLE BEHIND THACHER.

 18-under National Team Championships, Ryan Thacher's performance was instrumental in top-seeded Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  securing a three-peat following a 6-1 victory over No. 2 Southern at Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.

 (Hickory, N.C.) and Calvin Kemp (Atlanta) 9-7 in doubles. Thacher then recorded a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Eric Quigley (Pewee pewee: see flycatcher.  Valley, Ky.) in singles for Southern California, which was making its fourth consecutive appearance in the final.

``It's nice to bring it home for SoCal,'' said Thacher, who won all four singles matches and three doubles pro-sets during the four-day event. ``When you face these players in tournaments, you don't think much about it. But when you see them and they're playing for a team, you psyche yourself out because you want to win it for (SoCal). That's what makes these events special.''

Thacher's victory was one of three three-set triumphs Tuesday for Southern California, which won 20 of 24 singles matches in the tournament. The junior hadn't dropped a set in previous victories over Intermountain, Texas and Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern .

``The Southern team had a lot of depth and we had to go out there and grind,'' Thacher said.
