For a group that never had competed together before Sunday, Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  looked nothing like a first-time outfit in the opening round of the USTA USTA United States Tennis Association

Led by Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's Ryan Thacher and Thousand Oaks' JT Sundling, Southern California didn't drop a set against the Middle States representative en route to a 9-0 victory at Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, La.

Southern California, the second seed in the 16-team tournament, will face No. 8 Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. Thacher, the top-ranked 16-under player in the country, set the tone for Southern California with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Casey Watt of Gibsonia, Pa., in one of three boys' singles matches.

Sundling, 15, teamed with Arroyo Grande's Andre Dome to record a 6-1, 6-0 win over Courtney Scott and Gary Wang in Wang In (Korean: 왕인; Japanese: Wani (王仁  the lone boys' doubles match.

Isip, who trains at the Weil Academy in Ojai, and Lakewood's Stacey Tan recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lauren Hankle (East Petersburg, Pa.) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill Cherry Hill, township (1990 pop. 69,319), Camden co., W central N.J.; name was changed from Delaware township to Cherry Hill in 1961. Largely residential, Cherry Hill has been marked by great development and housing growth, especially since the 1970s. , N.J.) in the lone girls' doubles match.
