TENNIS: SHARAPOVA IS TOP SEED AT CHASE.

Led by Sharapova, Russian players make up four of the top five seeds in the tournament for the second year in a row. Nadia Petrova Nadia Petrova (pee-TROH-vuh; Russian:Надежда Петрова , Nadézhda Petróva  is second, Elena Dementieva is third and Dinara Safina is fifth.

Other seeded players are Lindsay Davenport in fourth, Ana-Lena Groenfeld in sixth, Daniela Hantuchova in seventh and Flavia Pennetta in eighth.

Serena Williams, who grew up in Southern California in Compton, is scheduled to play in only her third event of the year because of a knee injury.

All seeded players receive a bye in the first round.

Retired men's tennis greats Pete Sampras and Jim Courier will have an exhibition match Monday around 8:30 p.m.
