LANCASTER - Endeavour Middle School unveiled a mural mural Painting applied to and made integral with the surface of a wall or ceiling. Its roots can be found in the universal desire that led prehistoric peoples to create cave paintings—the desire to decorate their surroundings and express their ideas and beliefs. designed to create pride and unity among youngsters at the temporary campus. Depicting youngsters playing in front of the permanent Endeavour school, which officials hope will open in 2007, the mural was the work of more than 20 students. ``We wanted to come up with a project that would give the kids kind of a legacy at Endeavour Middle School and bring in also the community and create pride in both the school and the community,'' said teacher Stacy Zelenski, whose husband, Ray Zelenski, suggested the idea after being involved in a similar project in Ireland. The mural was painted on plywood plywood, manufactured board composed of an odd number of thin sheets of wood glued together under pressure with grains of the successive layers at right angles. Laminated wood differs from plywood in that the grains of its sheets are parallel. sheets screwed to the exterior of a portable classroom building. The mural will be moved to the new campus at 45th Street West and Avenue K when it opens. The new school buildings were sketched into the mural by projecting the architect's design onto the plywood. ``We're on this temporary site. We're like dirt, asphalt asphalt (ăs`fôlt, –fălt), brownish-black substance used commonly in road making, roofing, and waterproofing. Chemically, it is a natural mixture of hydrocarbons. and bungalows, and we don't have a whole lot here in the way of facilities, so it was something to sort of spruce spruce, any plant of the genus Picea, evergreen trees or shrubs of the family Pinaceae (pine family) widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. The needles are angular in cross section, rather than flattened as in the related hemlocks and firs. this campus up while we're at it,'' said Principal Bob Porter. Twenty sixth-graders were chosen to help paint the mural after they submitted essays about why they wanted to do it. Staffers and other students also helped. Before the unveiling, the student artists were picked up at the campus for a drive around Lancaster in a Hummer limousine outfitted out·fit n. 1. The temporary campus opened in August with 220 sixth-graders. Next year the school will add a new class of 200 sixth-graders and is expected ultimately to contain 1,400 students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
