TEMIRKANOV ADDS HEART TO BEAT OF CLASSICAL GREATS.

WHILE RUSSIAN conductor Yuri Temirkanov directed the St. Petersburg Philharmonic The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1882 and is Russia 's oldest symphony orchestra.

It was initially known as the "Imperial Music Choir" and performed privately for the court of Alexander III of Russia.

. So there was a touch of nostalgia in the air Thursday, when a program of familiar French and Russian works received robust and heartfelt performances.

Temirkanov's bearing on the podium radiates deep affection for the scores he leads. He conducts without a baton, his movements resembling exotic swim strokes.

But though spontaneity is suggested, he is a famously exacting, detail-oriented maestro. That was clear in ``Le Tombeau de Couperin Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, composed between 1914 and 1917.

It is in six movements. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War I.
