TEMIC Semiconductors Introduces New High-Performance 8-Bit C51 Microcontroller With Enhanced Memory and Peripherals.NANTES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1999--TEMIC Semiconductors, a leading supplier for 80C51 devices, announced today a new high-performance derivative, the TS80C51Rx2. Pin-for-pin compatible with Intel Rx and Fx, Philips Rx+ and Fx, this new range of devices is faster, has more memory and wider array of peripherals than previous circuits. The speed of the TS80C51Rx2 has been enhanced with an X2 capability which doubles the internal clock speed. This enables the device to offer a 60MHz performance from a 30MHz external crystal. Program memory has also been extended with ROM and OTP (1) (One Time Programmable) Refers to programming content or logic into chips such as EPROMs and EEPROMs, which cannot be reversed. See antifuse. (2) (One Time P ranging from 16 to 64 Kbytes and RAM available from 512 to 1024 bytes. Peripheral changes include a Programmable Counter Array (PCA (tool, programming) PCA - A dynamic analyser from DEC giving information on run-time performance and code use. ) with input capture, output compare and PWM functions, and an improved watchdog timer. In addition, up to 48 I/O are available on the 64/68-pin TS80C51RD2 to address a broader range of applications. This microcontroller family has been developed with Gemplus as an alpha site partner. According to Jean-Luc Sentis, manager of the Hardware Product Division of Gemplus, "Our co-operation with TEMIC TEMIC Telecommunications Executive Management Institute of Canada Semiconductors brought a reliable alternate silicon source and helped to optimize the design of Smart Card Reader in PC access control." "Major developments on such an established architecture like the 8-bit 80C51 are few and far between," said Martina Knott, TEMIC Semiconductor's product line manager for C51 Microcontrollers. "The enhancements we have made in the TS80C51Rx2 will enable designers to continue with their 8-bit designs rather than migrating to higher risk and cost 16-bit solutions. We expect the Rx2 to be used in many consumer, communication and industrial applications including smart card readers, alarms and medical instrumentation." The new TS80C51Rx2 is backed by industry-standard software development tools, compilers, assemblers and simulators. Most OTP and UV PROM programmers support the TEMIC Semiconductors algorithm, and emulators and development boards can be obtained from Metalink, Nohau and Ceibo. TS80C51Rx2 parts are available in speeds of 40 and 60MHz, with operating voltages of 3 and 5V available in both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Package options include 40-pin PDIL (language) PDIL - A language developed at Agence d'Informatique, France in the 1970s for description of communication protocols. It was part of the RHIN project. , 44- and 68-pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) A plastic, square, surface mount chip package that contains leads on all four sides. The leads (pins) extend down and back under and into tiny indentations in the housing. See chip package. , and 44- and 64-pin VQFP VQFP Very Thin Quad Flat Package VQFP Very small Quad Flat Package VQFP very-fine-pitch quad flat pack . Samples of the TS87C51RC2 (32 Kbytes OTP version) are available now. Production ordering of the ROM version, TS83C51RC2, is open with lead times of 8 weeks. Pricing in 1000-piece quantities starts at $5 for the 32k bytes OTP and at $3 for the ROMless products.
