TELXON JOINS WITH AW COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO EXPAND RETAIL OFFERINGS

TELXON JOINS WITH AW COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO EXPAND RETAIL OFFERINGS
AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: TLXN) and AW Computer Systems, Inc. of Mt. Laurel, N.J., announced today the signing of an agreement which gives Telxon marketing rights to AW's new radio frequency (RF) data communications connectivity systems in all segments of the retail industry.
Telxon projects that the three-year agreement, which was announced at the automatic identification industry's major trade show, Scan-Tech '91 in Dallas, may generate more than $10 million in revenue for the company.
Telxon is the world leader in hand-held microcomputer technology, while AW is a leading supplier of point-of-sale (POS) hardware and software systems that enable hand-held computers, older-generation IBM and several other brands of POS terminals to communicate with the latest IBM 4680 controllers.
"This alliance has major implications for Telxon, AW and the retail industry," said Raymond D. Meyo, Telxon president and chief executive officer. "It virtually makes Telxon the technology solution provider for all in-store retailing systems. At the same time, the availability of AW's unique value-added systems will help retailers preserve their current POS investments."
Telxon will be the major systems solution vendor interfacing hand-held technology to the total store environment, Meyo explained. He said the Telxon/AW alliance expands the market for Telxon's current line of hand-held computer systems and accelerates the development of new products like POSXPRESS (TM), a portable POS terminal that communicates seamlessly via wide band radio frequency with the store's POS controller. Telxon unveiled POSXPRESS and other hand-held POS computers at Scan-Tech.
"AW's interface technology and knowledge of retailers' system requirements, combined with Telxon's worldwide marketing prowess and excellent technology, will make this combination a powerful force in the POS marketplace," said Nicholas Ambrus, AW chairman and chief executive officer.
"With the Telxon/AW connectivity enhancements, all types of retailers can easily upgrade their POS systems to the advanced 4680 controller and still protect their investments in their current POS terminals," said Meyo. "At the same time, with the AW connectivity to the 4680 controller, retailers can cash in on the benefits of hand-held computer technology and real-time communications in other applications such as receiving, price management and inventory control.
"The alliance will substantially reduce the total investment in the latest POS hardware, while providing computerized controls over the retailer's entire operation," Meyo said.
Telxon Portable Tele-transaction Computers (PTCs) gather, process and store on-site, real-time data which is communicated to a host computer. These systems incorporate the company's proprietary operating and applications software, associated peripheral equipment and communications devices.
Telxon's executive and engineering offices are located in Akron, Ohio, and its manufacturing facility is in Houston. Telxon customers are served by more than 50 sales and service offices worldwide.
