TELXON ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION OF WAL-MART WIRELESS NETWORK
 Spread Spectrum System Brings Real-Time
 Data Communication to Leading Retailer
AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ: TLXN) today announced that its joint project with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to implement the DATASPAN 2000(TM) wireless spread spectrum radio communication network has been successfully installed in record time in all of Wal-Mart's 1,804 stores nationwide.
Under an agreement reached between Telxon and Wal-Mart last February, Telxon has supplied the retailer with a wireless, portable data transaction system per store. Each system consists of a custom configuration of Telxon's Gateway Connectivity Processor (GCP), an advanced radio frequency (RF) communications controller; eight to 16 Telxon Portable Tele-transaction Computers (PTC)-960DS that incorporate Photographic Sciences Corporation's (PSC) laser-based bar code scanners; and spread spectrum radios from Telesystems SLW Inc., a Telxon subsidiary.
Wal-Mart associates are using the Telxon systems to perform a wide range of retail applications, including price verification, inventory management and merchandise ordering. The systems enable sales associates to perform these applications and send and receive necessary data in real-time, communicating wirelessly with the in-store processor.
The PTC-960 communicates to a UNIX-based NCR or HP in-store processor through the GCP to the store's TCP/IP Ethernet LAN. The LAN also connects the in-store processor and the Telxon system to the Point- of-Sale (POS) system and to Wal-Mart's proprietary, nationwide satellite network.
"The use of Telxon's advanced DATASPAN 2000 spread spectrum network in Wal-Mart stores represents the largest installed base of spread spectrum-based portable data collection systems in the U.S.," said Raymond D. Meyo, president and chief executive officer of Telxon. "The ability of our spread spectrum network to achieve full communication coverage using a single radio frequency antenna reinforces the flexibility and superiority of our wireless technology. Thanks to this technology, Wal-Mart associates can move freely, performing PTC applications without losing the wireless communications signal of their terminals."
Phase one in the Telxon/Wal-Mart joint project began last April and was completed in June. Each Telxon wireless data collection system was thoroughly tested prior to shipment in Telxon's Houston manufacturing facilities and then custom-configured for each Wal-Mart store. Wal-Mart planned and managed the installation of the systems with technical assistance from Telxon's Customer Support Services Team.
The second phase in the project--the final installation of PTCs to provide each store with their full complement of systems--was accomplished in a record time-frame of 90 days.
"Wal-Mart selected Telxon for its PTC-960 systems because it was the only vendor that could install the most complete spread spectrum-based system, with little disruption and in record time," said Bobby Martin, executive vice president of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "The advance technology features of the wireless system, combined with Telxon's ability to customize the products to meet our particular needs, have enabled us to work together effectively as true corporate partners."
Telxon continues to support Wal-Mart's aggressive retail expansion program and also is supplying the retailer with wireless spread spectrum systems for WalMart distribution centers.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), based in Bentonville, Ark., is the nation's largest retailer. The company currently operates 1,804 Wal-Mart stores, 241 SAM's Clubs and 21 major Distribution Centers across the company's 44-state trade territory plus Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Telxon Corporation is the leading provider of complete hand-held data collection systems and communications products worldwide. The company integrates its advanced PTC hand-held PCs, real-time communication technology, bar code scanning and application software-- combined with the highest levels of service and support--to offer customers in retailing, warehousing, manufacturing, distribution, logistics and a variety of industries with complete data collection solutions.
