TELLABS TITAN 5500 DIGITAL CROSS-CONNECT SYSTEM TO STRENGTHEN NYNEX MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS' CELLULAR NETWORK

LISLE, Ill., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Tellabs Operations, Inc., announced today that NYNEX Mobile Communications Co. is installing Tellabs' TITAN(R) 5500 digital cross connect system in its cellular network.
This announcement represents the first application of SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) cross-connect technology within the NYNEX Mobile network. The Tellabs equipment will be used in NYNEX Mobile's Manhattan Switching Center.
"NYNEX Mobile has a solid reputation as an innovative, quality oriented carrier," said Richard T. Taylor, vice president of the Tellabs Digital Systems Division. "We are pleased they have chosen Tellabs to supply this important network element."
The TITAN 5500 system will allow NYNEX Mobile to remotely monitor and reconfigure circuits before failures in the network occur. The system provides real-time disaster prevention and recovery of existing circuits, simplified circuit maintenance and troubleshooting capabilities. The SONET-based switching core at the heart of the TITAN 5500 system ensures the highest standard of signal quality and provides the foundation for the SONET platform of the future.
"Installing the Tellabs equipment in our network will enable NYNEX Mobile to respond more rapidly to sudden increases in traffic volume," said Ed Knapp, director of engineering, NYNEX Mobile Communications. "This is the kind of network enhancement that will enable NYNEX Mobile to continue providing the highest quality cellular services, even in times of enormous service demand like we experienced during the winter storms and the World Trade Center disaster."
NYNEX Mobile Communications Co., a member of the NYNEX family of companies, is one of the nation's leading providers of wire-free communications services. The 1,200-employee company provides cellular telephone service to more than 420,000 customers in the Northeast.
