TELEDEBIT INTRODUCES PREPAID LONG DISTANCE TELEPHONE SERVICE IN AMERICA

MCLEAN, Va., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- TeleDebit, a newly formed telecommunications provider based in Sarasota, Fla., is introducing a prepaid telephone service to American consumers through the distribution of a debit phone card.
In contrast to credit-type calling cards, debit phone cards represent a fixed amount of purchased telephone time. Every time a call is made, a dollar amount is deducted from the card's value according to the minutes used.
In addition, debit phone cards are transferable and can be purchased by consumers as gifts for family and friends. And, exposure to fraud is limited because phone charges cannot accumulate beyond the amount prepaid.
TeleDebit's President, George C. Pierce said: "TeleDebit phone cards are not dependent on special phone equipment. Compared to debit phone cards used in Europe and Asia, TeleDebit's phone cards can be used from any touch-tone phone."
TeleDebit's debit phone service is accessed by dialing an 800-number and account code displayed on the back of the card. Calls are routed through TeleDebit's Interactive Call Management System (ICMS), a patent- pending computer platform developed specifically to manage the applications of TeleDebit's service.
ICMS routes calls and monitors card balances to prevent cards from being used beyond the amount prepaid. ICMS also offers on-line features that help users control telephone usage and expense, and step-by-step voice instructions for fast and convenient service.
TeleDebit can be accessed from any touch-tone phone within the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada. Calls can be made within the United States and to 178 countries worldwide.
International access to TeleDebit's debit phone service from 37 countries, including country-to-country calling outside the United States, will be fully operational May 1993.
The TeleDebit phone service will be positioned to appeal to specific consumer markets. Targeted groups include foreign visitors traveling in the United States, many of whom are already familiar with the debit card concept.
Other markets include college students who can use the TeleDebit service to call home while maintaining a budget; or corporate and military personnel who are operating on fixed allotments for long- distance calling.
The company is a limited partnership, formed April 7, 1992. Its managing general partner, TeleDebit Corporation is based in Sarasota. World Resources Company of McLean, is a major investor in the venture and is acting as a marketing division for the company.
