TEENS HELP IN NEWHALL CLEANUP; VOLUNTEERS PREPARE AREA FOR SEASON OF HOLIDAY EVENTS.

More than 30 junior high and high school students joined a band of other volunteers Saturday to clean up downtown Newhall as the city gets ready for the Festival of Holidays parade and events.

Organized by Councilwoman Jill Klajic, the volunteers focused on cleaning alleyways behind stores along San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , as well as curbs, gutters, flower beds and merchants' windows.

``We are pleased that everyone wishes to help in this, Jill came up with the concept and we want everything to be nice for the holiday festival,'' said Christie Sanner, who is Klajic's secretary and volunteered during the cleanup.

Klajic had intended to join in the cleanup, but she was called out of town on business, Sanner said.

``Because of our grade-point average we are in a special program at school which teaches us to be community service-oriented,'' Feneht said.

Feneht and Gullery wanted to put their heads and hands together to assist.

``It's fun, I'd rather do something like this than to be doing nothing or just playing,'' said Gullery, 13, who also volunteered her time at last week's Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Walk Against Diabetes.

The volunteers worked from 9 a.m. through noon, much to the delight of neighborhood merchants and cleanup organizers.
