And if it's ready in time, the youths' Next Generation Productions Inc. also will run its first public service announcement pleading for racial harmony.

The film was scheduled for a special screening this week at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah Park City is a city located in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is one of two major resort towns in Utah, the other being Moab. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back and a part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. , but the local showing will be its debut before the general public.

The work was but a dream for director Elizabeth Eiben who was 14 when she and 40 other teens from Next Generation visited the Utah festival three years ago. This week, the teens returned to Sundance to fulfill a promise - to return with a feature film they wrote, produced, directed and edited.

Eiben, who served as editor and one of the 13 writers on the film, planned to view the production in a special screening sponsored by the Sundance Institute.

Next Generation is a nonprofit educational organization that provides teen-agers with access to careers in the media arts, an opportunity to produce their own projects and develop valuable technical and interpersonal skills "Interpersonal skills" refers to mental and communicative algorithms applied during social communications and interactions in order to reach certain effects or results. The initial visit to the Sundance Festival, prior to the start-up of Next Generation, was described by Eiben as ``one of the best times of my life.'' She and 15 friends from teacher James Gleason's filmmaking class at Pacoima Magnet School magnet school

had their first meeting to plan their film on Eiben's 15th birthday in February 1995.

What followed was an arduous yet rewarding journey, which would not only produce a feature film, but change the lives of 50 teen-agers from throughout the Southland.

For a year the original seven writers juggled homework, after-school activities and weekend writing sessions under the guidance of Gleason and Evelyn Seubert, the organization's executive director. In February 1995, the crew expanded to include students from other Los Angeles schools The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  ages 13 to 18, plunged into an intensive six-month training program to learn every aspect of film production.

More than 70 professionals from the Hollywood community volunteered their time to mentor the students. Corporations offered financial help.

``Common Bonds'' is the story of a troubled teen-age girl who is sentenced to community service in a retirement home. Antonio Manriquez was 14 when he began directing the film, working often with actors three times his age.

``Teens are underestimated,'' Manriquez said. ``It's one of the themes in the film, and I wanted to prove by making this film that they shouldn't be.''

Kate McKinney, who started on the writing staff and art crew, was cast to play the troubled teen, K.C. Her life in many ways paralleled that of her character.

``Working on this movie is the first positive thing I've been able to do in a year so. I'm so thankful,'' said McKinney, now a scholarship student at Columbia College/Hollywood.
