OK, not the big league, but the Little Leagues' Big League, which gives many players between 16 and 18 their last shot at playing baseball on an organized team.

Tryouts for the Simi Valley team were held Sunday at Darrah Park.

``We just have some kids that want to hang around and play a few more times,'' said Kevin Davies This article is about the football player. For the director, see Kevin Davies (director).

About 30 people tried out for the team, and maybe 18 will make the cut, Davies said. Coaches look for the time-tested skills that make a good baseball player: base running, catching, fielding, throwing, batting and pitching.

Attitude is also a big component at this age level, especially when the players have so many other things competing for their time and attention, Davies said.

Many of those trying out play other sports or didn't make the cut on their high school teams. But the love of baseball keeps them coming back for more.

``There's a lot of very athletic kids that are playing,'' Davies said. ``The competition level can be fairly good.''

Jonathan Turner, an 18-year-old Simi Valley resident, has been playing baseball since he was at least 7. He is schooled at home, so he doesn't have the opportunity to try out for high school teams.

If it were not for the Big League, he probably would not be playing, he said.

When the season begins in June, teams will play 15 to 20 games, all doubleheaders. They travel across the county to play their counterparts from other cities.

Some of the younger players use the Big League to hone their skills before again trying out for their high school teams the next year, Davies said.
