On to the next problem, the next question. The next light bulb bulb, thickened, fleshy plant bud, usually formed under the surface of the soil, which carries the plant over from one blooming season to another. It may have many fleshy layers (as in the onion and hyacinth) or thin dry scales (as in some lilies)—both of which about to go off in a beautiful, young mind. ``Look at them,'' Sharon Roth said. ``That's exactly what we were hoping for when we started this program last month.'' She was about to find out the answer to a question that had been dogging her for months while she was setting up this triangular mentoring program in the Valley, modeled after one run by Catholic Big Brothers in Bellflower bellflower, in botany bellflower or bluebell, name commonly used as a comprehensive term for members of the Campanulaceae, a family of chiefly herbaceous annuals or perennials of wide distribution, characteristically found on dry . If you asked, would they come? Would enough Van Nuys High School students give up a couple of hours of their precious, after-school time every week to help younger students down the street make it through some rough, rocky times? Roth feared no teen-agers would come. ``I was hoping for five to show up at Cohasset that first day,'' Roth said. ``When 25 walked through the door, I knew it was going to work. ``And now, there are more coming in every week. It's wonderful.'' Yes, it is. Wonderful. All the way around. ``I was lucky when I was in third grade,'' Thara said, looking over at her friend, Margalit Kochav, 16, helping another Cohasset third-grader with her lessons. ``My parents had the time to help me with my school work, but a lot of these kids don't have that opportunity,'' she said. ``Margalit and I know that. That's why we got involved. ``We want to help these kids with whatever problems they have now, so they won't have them when they reach middle and high school.'' Smart girls. That's probably why they've set their own goals high. They want to be pediatricians. Cherie Spamer, principal of Cohasset, said the mentoring program has been a big hit with her students and their parents. ``We have 827 students here, and I'd say about 400 of them could use some kind of mentoring,'' she said. ``So many of our parents are working two jobs trying to do what's best for their kids, but they're missing the interaction with their children. The kids from Van Nuys High help fill that gap and give our kids wonderful teen-age role models to look up to. ``Every day, I'm having more and more parents asking me about the program, wanting to get their children involved,'' Spamer said. ``Even the kids themselves are coming up to me wanting to join.'' As the last leg of the triangle, adults serve as mentors for the high school kids, Roth said. She is hoping to recruit more adults, and she can be reached at the Van Nuys Healthy Start Collaborative, (818) 786-1438. The pencils are put away and the paper is back in the notebook folders. The lessons are over for the day. It's snack time. On the playground tables, Roth sets out some snacks donated do·nate v. do·nat·ed, do·nat·ing, do·nates v.tr. Over some doughnuts and orange juice, the teen-agers tell the younger ones what life's like up the block in the big time - at Van Nuys High. Sharon Roth watches them with a smile that seems wider than her face. Come 4:30 p.m., the kids say their goodbyes and promise to meet again Thursday afternoon.
