TEEN KILLED IN GUNFIGHT WITH DEPUTIES; 2 OFFICERS NOT SERIOUSLY HURT IN LYNWOOD INCIDENT.

Byline: Douglas Haberman Daily News Staff Writer

A 16-year-old Lynwood boy was killed in a gunbattle early Sunday after he shot two sheriff's deputies, authorities said.

Neither deputy was seriously wounded A casualty whose injuries or illness are of such severity that the patient is rendered unable to walk or sit, thereby requiring a litter for movement and evacuation. See also evacuation; litter; patient. , Deputy Bob Killeen said.

The teen-ager, Julio Castillo, was killed after sheriff's deputies responded about 1:55 a.m. to a report of a disturbance in which a gun was being brandished in the 3700 block of Fernwood Avenue, Killeen said.

In the darkness, Castillo took a girl - possibly a former girlfriend - from a home to an embankment along the nearby 105 Freeway, Killeen said.

Castillo touched off an exchange of gunfire by pointing his shotgun shotgun: see small arms.

Castillo was shot to death a few minutes later in a second exchange of gunfire, Killeen said.

The deputies hit by gunfire were treated and released from a hospital. The protective vest apparently saved one's life, Killeen said.

``He didn't even realize he'd been shot till later,'' said Killeen, although a similar vest was pierced pierced
