Byline: Orith Goldberg Staff Writer

A 17-year-old gang member will spend 10 months in a detention camp after pleading guilty to attempting a drive-by shooting drive-by shooting Public health A phenomenon in which one or more persons–commonly members of street gangs, open fire à la Al Capone from moving vehicles, often in retaliation for an alleged wrong-doing by a rival gang  - the gun malfunctioned - at a rival's house in Canyon Country, authorities said Monday.

Rather than go to trial, the youth, whose identity was withheld because he is a minor, pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  charges of assault with a firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. The two cars then moved down the street but turned around, Howard said.

In front of the house, the driver of one of the cars pulled the trigger several times on a two-shot .22-caliber Derringer pistol, Howard said, but the gun did not go off.

The two cars left and were returning later when the occupants spotted squad cars near the house and drove away, Howard said.

``They saw the patrol cars go by, and they split up,'' he said.

About 4:30 a.m. the next day, a sheriff's deputy spotted a car on Whites Canyon Road that matched the description of the one from which a youth had aimed a gun, Howard said.

Deputies found the gun while questioning the youth, he said. The single bullet in the chamber had three firing-pin marks on the primer, indicating that the trigger had been pulled three times and the gun did not fire, investigators said.

The boy was sentenced to a minimum of 300 days at a detention camp and will remain on probation after his release, officials said.

In connection with the attempted shooting, authorities arrested two juveniles for probation violations and one young adult for violating his parole.

The attempted shooting marked the first drive-by attack this year in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. In one of two drive-by shootings last year, 20-year-old Robert Aguilera was shot and killed in Newhall, Howard said.

Another shooting occurred in front of Sierra Vista Junior High School at night. The victim in that shooting survived.
