 senior Ken Roy received $3,000 as first-place winner in Film and Video in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (known by the acronym NFAA honors the most talented high school seniors in the performing, visual and literary arts from the United States through the youngARTS program.(formerly known as the acronym ARTS).  national competition.

The animated-film maker spent a week in Miami, Fla., in the final phase of the contest.

``It was a surprise! I had no idea of the scope of this thing. It was my film teacher's (Catherine Dunn's) idea to apply,'' he said.

``My brother Dan forced me to learn computer graphics when I was 12. I have him to thank for starting me off, he's a computer science student at MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology ,'' said the 18-year-old animator.

The teen started making films in the seventh grade, including book reports, documentaries, music videos and features.

Farmer's Insurance Group has awarded 10 Valley students in the Young Americano photo competition held at the Natural History Museum on Feb. 3.

Heather Fowlie, a senior at La Canada High School received $1,000 as the grand prize winner.

The competition was part of the ``Americanos: Latin Life in the United States'' photo exhibit now on display at the museum.

Others from the Valley winning in the high school category are Joanna Zielinska, also from La Canada High School; and Stephanie Houseal, Matt Lefkowitz!, Ashley Mo, Freddie Mendoza, Danielle Ogez and Lee Rosen, all from Agoura Hills High School. Each won $500.

Honorable mentions are Sandra Gray of Granada Hills High School Granada Hills Charter High School (Granada Hills High School) is a public, charter, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in grades 9-12. Five local teens are semifinalists for the Got Milk? Home Video Commercial contest sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board.

Jose Juarez, Hilda Arredondo and Jessica Magana were named from San Fernando High School San Fernando High School, located in San Fernando, California, is a secondary school that is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The school colors are black and gold. All girl teams are referred to as Lady Tigers, all boy teams simply as Tigers.

Kiarash Behain and Elaine Killimnik were selected from Birmingham High School Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighborhood/district of Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley section of the city of Los Angeles, California. The school is a part of District One of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  in Van Nuys.

Grand prize winners will be chosen Feb. 14.

Many other local young people have been singled out for their outstanding abilities and excellence in musical or academic achievements.

Danny Tannenbaum, a senior at North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey. , has been chosen as a member of the Grammy High School jazz ensemble.

The teen was selected from students across the nation to play at various venues around Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and to attend the 43rd Grammy Awards presentation at Staples Center.

Kathryn Wilson, a Thousand Oaks resident, has been named by Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., to the Laureate Society for maintaining a 3.75 grade point average.

The 19-year-old sophomore is majoring in Spanish and secondary education. She is the daughter of Stephen and Linda Wilson.

Susanna C. Murrie is on the dean's list at Harding University in Searcy, Ark. The sophomore is the daughter of Jacquelyn and Michael Howard Murrie. She is majoring in social work.

Newbury Park resident Jessica Yas attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. - chosen for her academic achievement and leadership potential.

Niko Milonopoulos, a 14-year-old Studio City resident is a California finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

He will receive $1,000, an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. and a silver medallion.

Niko created Kidz Voice L.A., a nonprofit children's activist group with his twin brother, Theo, to help stop the regular display of violence on television and in movies.

The brothers circulated a petition and collected more than 7,000 signatures from other kids to ban the sale of ammunition in the city of Los Angeles
