TEEN FACES LIFE FOR SLAYING.

LANCASTER - A teenager suspected in a home-invasion robbery spree in which an accomplice accomplice: see accessory.  was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy has become the second person charged with murder for a deadly attempted carjacking The criminal taking of a motor vehicle from its driver by force, violence, or intimidation.

Kyrone Blakney, 17, of Lancaster has been charged with murder in the Aug. 22 shooting death of 68-year-old Ladd Franklin Schweitzer of Palmdale, who was shot after refusing to hand over his money to a gunman who had stopped his van on an isolated two-lane road.

Blakney was charged as an adult under Proposition 21, which permits prosecutors to charge minors with serious offenses in adult court, without a judge's ruling, as had been required in the past.

``It fits the requirements. If you commit homicide and you're a certain age, we can direct file,'' Deputy District Attorney Carlos Chung said. ``It's a discretionary call.''

Blakney is charged with murder, with no special circumstance allegation, attempted murder, and burglary, Chung said.

Schweitzer was shot shortly after 11 p.m. Aug. 22 as he tried to drive away from the would-be robber, who had parked a car to block traffic on 70th Street East near Avenue N, homicide investigators said.

Schweitzer died at a hospital. The gunman fled without taking anything.
