TEE OFF TIME.

Byline: Shawn Miller The Register-Guard

S ALEM - Since the high school season wrapped up nearly two months ago, the state's junior golfers are deep into the real competition - playing Oregon Junior Golf.

Although the Oregon Golf Association, which runs junior golf throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington, works closely with high school golf, there are major differences between the two seasons - notably the challenge of both the courses and the level of competition.

"There is an arbitrary division of individual players based on the size of the school, not the quality of the players," Oregon Junior Golf's Director of Communications Director of Communications is a position in the private and public sectors. The Director of Communications is responsible for managing and directing an organization's internal and external communications.  Eric Yaillen said of high school golf. "There is no opportunity for the 6A champion to play the 5A champion, unless they are going into another level of program, which is Oregon Junior Golf."

The junior golf program includes boys and girls boys and girls

Junior golf also plays on some of the toughest courses in the state, adding several hundred yards to the length of courses high school golfers generally play. Yaillen said the typical length of a high school course for boys is 6,200 to 6,300 yards and for girls is approximately 5,200 yards. He noted that the junior golf events add more than 500 yards to each round.

"What high school does is they shorten (audio, compression) Shorten - A form of lossless audio compression.  the length because that brings in the kids with the lesser ability into the game a little bit more," he said. "It makes it more of a team event."

At the Junior Match Play Championships, held at Creekside Golf Course in Salem, June 25-29, the course length was nearly 7,000 yards.

"We're playing at 6,900 yards out here," Director of Junior Golf Charlotte Plank said. "We're playing the ball down. We have educated rules officials and a number of educated marshals out there."

The individualism individualism

Political and social philosophy that emphasizes individual freedom. Modern individualism emerged in Britain with the ideas of Adam Smith and Jeremy Bentham, and the concept was described by Alexis de Tocqueville as fundamental to the American temper.
of the sport is also emphasized in junior golf, where competitors have to learn at an early age that there aren't teammates to average out the scoring, or coaches to give advice.

"If you hit a bad shot, you've got to go chase it and you've got to make up for it," said Sheldon senior-to-be Philip Bagdade. "You have to try to limit the damage as much as possible and just fight back always.

"It's so much more on yourself. You don't have your coaches come up to you and give you encouraging words. You've got to be able to figure it out on your own if it's not going well."

Bagdade has played junior golf since he was 10 and is reaping the benefits. He has won two of the major junior golf tournaments this summer, the Peter Jacobson Junior Challenge and the Junior Match Play Championships. Bagdade is being recruiting by numerous collegiate col·le·giate

It is what I have done for as long as I can remember. It's something I always looked to as a kid and now I'm coming back watching the kids."

Martin, along with Plank and Yaillen, noted that without the experience of junior golf, high school golfers aren't as likely to be recruited.

Sheldon graduate Jack Dukeminier, who will play for Oregon next season, said his breakthrough win at the 2005 Junior Match Play Tournament led to collegiate offers.

"I almost look at high school as like a warm-up season, besides state," Dukeminier said. "Other than that, high school is way less formal."
