TEAMSTERS WITHDRAW FROM ORGANIZING ELECTION AT EMERY

DAYTON, Ohio, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide announced today that it has been notified that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 957, has withdrawn its petition to hold a union organizing election Nov. 4 at the company's air freight operations here.
The union received permission from the National Labor Relations Board to quit the election after apparently determining they had little support. The Teamsters had attempted to organize approximately 1,250 Emery employees who work in Dayton, including the company's large hub sorting operation.
The organizing effort by the Teamsters union had the strong support of the IBT in Washington, D.C., and Teamsters President Ron Carey, who had personally campaigned in Dayton on behalf of the local.
"I am pleased that the employees have expressed confidence in the company, and in the turnaround that they have worked so hard to achieve," said Willard H. Scherrer Jr., senior vice president- transportation systems for the company.
"The last three years have been very difficult for all Emery employees. We literally had to fight for our professional lives. We are now profitable, however, and we can all look forward to a bright future at Emery."
Emery Worldwide is a $1.1 billion air freight company with 281 terminal and service locations in North America and 88 countries. Emery provides professional transportation services to support the time- definite traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial freight shipment.
