TEAMSTERS LOCAL 243 ENDS BOYCOTT AGAINST HIGHLAND SUPERSTORES
DETROIT, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 243:
Teamsters Local 243 called off its boycott against metro Detroit Highland Superstores today following the ratification of an agreement protecting the Local 243 Highland home delivery drivers who were locked out in early September.
Local 243 launched its boycott this past Labor Day and was quickly joined by the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO who urged its 400,000 members to take a stand for justice by not patronizing Highland until Local 243's dispute was resolved.
Throughout this boycott, Local 243 distributed hundreds of thousands of leaflets in front of Highland stores, urging customers not to shop at Highland until the union's dispute was settled. This informational campaign succeeded in spreading the word about Highland's unfair actions and cutting substantially into Highland's business trade.
"This boycott was a victory and shows that Local 243 has the resources and determination to do whatever is necessary to fight injustice and protect our members' jobs," Local 243 President Jim Esser said. "Our intent was never to drive Highland into bankruptcy, but rather to send a message that the financial consequences of replacing our members with non-union drivers would be far worse than if management had worked with us to design a long-term strategy to keep Highland financially strong."
Esser also praised the strong support Local 243 received, both from other union members and the general public, stating that this support "was the key ingredient to our eventual success."
Local 243 urges that the public resume patronizing Highland Superstores, Inc.
