TEAMSTER PRESIDENT HITS THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL FOR GOOD JOBS,
 NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE, FAIR TRADE

'Make America Work Again' Caravan Begins Midwest Tour in Detroit
 Monday, Oct. 12
WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In the final weeks before the Nov. 3 elections, Teamster President Ron Carey will log some 2,000 miles in a midwestern blitz to talk directly with union members and their families about key issues in the campaign.
Beginning on Monday, Oct. 12, in Detroit, Carey will meet with thousands of Teamsters in 13 major cities at special membership meetings and at worksites.
"After four years of George Bush, it's time to get this country moving again," Carey said.
"America's working people need good jobs, national health insurance, and a fair trade policy. We have a much better chance to win those things with Bill Clinton as president, and we're going all- out to help him get elected."
The seven states on the caravan itinerary -- Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri -- are critical to the outcome of the race for the White House. These states are a Teamster stronghold, with over 400,000 members concentrated largely around the cities where the caravan will be making its stops.
The Teamsters, whose new president and executive board took office in February after the union's first-ever direct rank-and-file election, have not backed a Democratic presidential candidate since Hubert Humphrey in 1968. The union's endorsement of Clinton, which was announced in July, has been widely interpreted as a bellwether signaling that the "Reagan Democrats" are coming home.
The "Make America Work Again" caravan is the final component of what has been an unprecedented campaign effort on the part of the 1.5-million-member union. Through a variety of union, worksite, and public events all across the country, the Teamsters have registered an estimated 100,000 new voters and distributed more than 5 million pieces of campaign literature.
"This election can open the door to change in America," Carey said. "Teamsters all over the country have poured out to rallies and campaign events. By going to the polls on election day, Teamsters can make the difference in turning this country around."
