``I'm hoping,'' Principal Jacque Snyder said. ``I've got my fingers crossed.''

Nominations are open to recipients of the California Distinguished School honor. Schools apply for the national award, and in Arroyo Seco's application, school officials focused on the team concept that divides students into groups of 120 to 150 that rotate among a team of teachers for the four core subjects.

``By putting our kids in smaller groups on campus, they do not have to deal with the overcrowding overcrowding

as much,'' Snyder said. ``They know the expectations and they're comfortable with their teachers, the counselors, the staff and the smaller group of kids.''

With 1,507 students in the seventh and eighth grades - and 1,600 expected next year on this campus built for 930 - Arroyo Seco Arroyo Seco (Spanish: "dry creek") may refer to:

is closed to newcomers to its attendance area. But the overcrowding, Snyder said, spawned an effective team-teaching program for math, science, English and history.

A national Blue Ribbon award is the top honor for public schools. The award is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to recognize exemplary educational programs in schools across the nation.

``To be considered among the best schools in the country is no small achievement,'' Leslie Crunelle, superintendent of educational services for the William S William, crown prince of Germany

Applications will be reviewed in January in Washington, D.C., by a panel that will consider student focus, school organization, standards and curriculum, teaching and learning, the professional community, leadership, school, family and community partnerships, and indicators of success.

That panel will recommend the schools that make the next cut - a visit by a team of experts from around the nation.

``We have to be careful in our application not to get caught up in the California standards; we need to make sure we spell things out,'' Snyder said.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced in May and schools will be honored in the fall during a ceremony at the White House.

Arroyo Seco was nominated for the award two years ago, and though it didn't win, state education officials urged Snyder to reapply Re`ap`ply´

``I hope that's a good sign,'' Snyder said.
