SCHRAMM Community columnist 'Damselfish in distress' could be the motto for Jana Saffro, a Tarzana elementary schoolteacher who won an educational fellowship to participate in an Earthwatch Institute Expedition in Barbados examining the survival rate of the colorful damselfish damselfish, common name for members of the large family Pomacentridae, marine fishes of tropical waters. Common in the West Indies and along the Florida coasts are the sergeant-major, named for its vertical stripes, and the reef fish, found among coral reefs. and the delicate ecosystem in which it lives. ``It is amazing to me that even within the protection of a marine reserve, how many locals and tourists still stand on the coral, break off pieces as souvenirs, or throw trash into the water,'' said Saffro. She said that local Bajans as well as tourists need to be more aware of their impact on the reefs. ``If they destroy the coral, then they are beginning a cycle of destruction which will eventually affect their own food source of local fish,'' said Saffro. Dr. Suzanne Dorsey, the team's lead investigator, is working on new beach signs to create a higher public awareness and make people responsible for their actions while in the water. As a certified rescue scuba diver, Saffro spent two weeks working with Dorsey diving and collecting zooplankton zooplankton: see marine biology. zooplankton Small floating or weakly swimming animals that drift with water currents and, with phytoplankton, make up the planktonic food supply on which almost all oceanic organisms ultimately depend (see (the microscopic food source for the damselfish), conducting beach, reef and predator surveys, and monitoring nesting sites to determine reproductive output.
