LANCASTER - When Cole Middle School teacher Holly Baker died from cancer last year, she was single with no children, but she had a large ``family.''

In her will, Baker gave $20,000 for Eastside Union School District to set up an art education fund.

``The students of our district were her children. This was one of the ways she gave back. She gave in so many ways. It's a gift that keeps giving,'' Principal Michele Bowers Bowers is a surname, and may refer to

 said.

Baker was Cole's most veteran teacher: she had worked for Eastside for 34 years, starting when Eastside School kept pupils up through the eighth grade.

A former art teacher, she retired from her job as a computer instructor in July 2004 after being diagnosed with cancer about a year earlier. She died in August 2004 at age 57.

Baker had asked that in lieu of Instead of; in place of; in substitution of. It does not mean in addition to.  flowers, people make donations to the fund. District employees have contributed about $800, and the Cole Middle School student government association last week donated do·nate

 $400.

Bowers said teachers and administrators will work together to develop a program that will serve as many students as possible.

``In this trust fund, we are looking forward to an opportunity to really bring some exposure to various arts to all our students,'' Bowers said.

Bowers noted that Eastside High School Eastside High School or East Side High School can refer to:

, which is under construction, will have a focus on the performing arts, and that Cole Middle School started a drama club this year that put on a production of ``Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.''

The bestowal of money as a permanent fund, the income of which is to be used for the benefit of a charity, college, or other institution.  like this will enable us to expand the program to a greater extent and include more elementary students and more Cole students in the program,'' Bowers said.

Baker was a talented artist herself, colleagues said. She enjoyed doing watercolors, charcoal charcoal, substance obtained by partial burning or carbonization (destructive distillation) of organic material. It is largely pure carbon. The entry of air during the carbonization process is controlled so that the organic material does not turn to ash, as in a  sketches and arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  projects that she gave to her friends.

``She could put her hand to anything that was artistic and do it,'' said teacher Barbara Leonard, who knew Baker for 25 years.

Baker set up an art education program for Eastside through the Getty Museum more than 10 years ago. It taught students not just how to draw but also how to understand and analyze art.

When Eastside students visited local museums, officials would comment on how well they could talk about line and color, Leonard said.

``She taught art before she took over the technology lab. She taught everything. She was one of the best math teachers that ever walked the ground,'' Leonard said. ``She was dedicated to her students and wanted to get the best for them.''

Having taught so many years, Baker had been around long enough to see the needs and challenges of a small school district, especially as budgets tighten and public schools emphasize academic basics and meeting state and federal testing standards.

``She was a fantastic art Fantastic art is a loosely defined art genre. The first "fantastic" artist is generally believed to be Hieronymus Bosch. Other artists who have been labeled fantastic include Brueghel, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung Grien, Francisco de Goya, Gustave Moreau,  teacher. That was a love of hers. She did not want to see that die in our district,'' said Kathy Mafnas, a former pupil who is now Eastside superintendent Greg Riccio's secretary.
